Employers can access government funds and grants to help cover the costs of apprenticeships , this can be dependent on age and location of the apprentice and invest in their teams’ future. It means that apprenticeships are a fantastic route employers can use to develop valuable career pathways and add skills to the company
During their apprenticeship, your apprentice will receive two different types of training.
‘On-the-job’ training will be delivered by you, as the employer. You’ll need to give your apprentice training and supervision to help them perform the job you’ve hired them to do. This will include skills and knowledge that fall outside of the apprenticeship, but which are needed for the job role.
Off-the-job’ training is delivered during your apprentice’s normal working hours.
Apprentices must spend at least 20% of their working hours completing ‘off-the-job’ training. This is protected time and is a legal requirement for apprenticeship delivery.
This training will teach your apprentice the knowledge, skills and behaviours set out in the apprenticeship standard so they can achieve occupational competence.
If you pay the apprenticeship levy, then your training funds are covered by the levy that you’ve already invested into. This is only for your apprenticeship training, not any additional qualifications. It does however include the End-point Assessment, including one resit. If you have a payroll of over £3 million, then the levy is charged at 0.5% of your total payroll, collected as part of your monthly PAYE.
If you don’t have a payroll over £3 million apprenticeship co-investment is available . Businesses that don’t qualify for the levy do not pay for the full apprenticeship programme.
The government pays 95% towards apprenticeship costs. Your funding will be limited to the funding band for that programme. The 5% left will be payable to your training provider (Academy Training LTD).
From April 2024, where an employer does not pay the apprenticeship levy, government will fund all the apprenticeship training costs (up to the funding band maximum) for those apprentices aged between 16 and 21 years old.
Employers that do not pay the levy can also benefit from fully funded apprenticeship training costs (up to the funding band maximum) for apprentices aged between 22 and 24 years-old who have an Education, Health and Care (EHC) plan and / or have been in the care of their local authority.
